DARG wins Vice-Chancellor's Award for International Reputation

Academics from the DARG research group

We are pleased to announce that the Discourse & Rhetoric Group (DARG) were winners in the ‘International Engagement and Impact’ category at the 2024 Vice-Chancellor's Awards. This award is presented for outstanding international engagement that has enhanced the University’s global profile.

Established in 1987, has a long and evolving tradition of research. All members study language in its everyday settings, with some focusing on its use in text and media and many on its use in interaction, researching both its foundations and its applications to real-world problems. The group brings together academics and researchers from across the university, most notably from the departments of Communication and Media, and Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy.

DARG has developed a reputation for offering a globally attended workshop in Conversation Analysis. In the last year alone, they have been approved by high profile organisations such as the Ministry of Justice, the Crown Prosecution Service and the NHS. Key areas of focus include the work of medical and health professionals, families and children, and the identity of ethnic categories.

Professor Elizabeth Peel, Acting Dean for Social Sciences and Humanities and DARG group member commented “The group is delighted to receive this award and acknowledgment. We are very proud that the work of the group helps to support the University’s reputation internationally.”
