Callum Hutton

Sport Outreach, Recruitment and Orientation Intern

I work for 91制片厂 Sport Development Centre (SDC).

My degree, for this role, was not largely relevant but all my extracurricular experiences and engagement was certainly influential in my appointment.

However, I also work for The FA as their Referee Sport Scientist on a freelance basis; role that I definitely couldn’t have secured without my degree subject matter.

Post 16 Education: A Level English Language, Geography and Physical Education (PE)

Higher Education: BSc Sport and Exercise Science

Why did you choose to study Sport and Exercise Science?

I wanted to investigate how all these elite level athletes really prize out the little 1% gains in their body to make them truly world-leading – there is no better place to immerse yourself in this, than here at 91制片厂 School of Sport and Exercise Health Sciences.

Sport and Exercise Science is the application of both fundamental physical and social sciences to both elitelevel athletes and general population wellbeing. This includes, physiology, biomechanical movements, psychological concepts and models, sociological influence on sport, and the impacts and benefits of both physical activity and non-activity on modern-day medicinal interventions.

Callum's advice

Stick with the discipline of revision and get into good habits and a routine. Still ensure that your timetable allows for down-time / social events to do the things you enjoy, but don’t underestimate the sense of achievement you will feel upon opening your results envelope when you see that the hard work has paid off. I once got told “no one ever says they wished they had done less revision” and I cannot echo this enough!

Callum’s experience as a student

Studying at University was a fantastic opportunity to meet new and likeminded people and a great environment in which to grow myself and become part of a collective family. It was for this reason that I chose LU too; the sense of family that is created due to the campus.

During my time at University I took up Refereeing, attending the Basic Referee Course, set-up and managed the Football Officiating Hub through the University’s Coaching and Volunteering Academy (CVA). I have now had back-to-back promotions and am part of The FA’s Centre of Refereeing Excellence (CORE) – pretty successful!
