Build a solid foundation of the knowledge and skills you will need to enter the fast-paced world of finance through this broad-based, CFA-affiliated master鈥檚 degree. This programme combines academic theory with the opportunity to undertake a practical consultancy project and build critical assets for your CV.

On this academically rigorous programme, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of finance, before choosing from optional modules to tailor your degree to your career aspirations.

Our MSc in Finance is ideal if you have an unrelated undergraduate degree and are looking to transition into a finance career. If you do have a finance background, this programme is an excellent way to deepen your finance skills and gain a well-recognised postgraduate qualification.

Develop a sought-after mix of financial expertise and robust professional skills

Throughout the degree, you will learn how to evaluate financial issues and improve the practice of finance within business. There is a strong emphasis on practical skills, with a year-long skills-based module which offers you the chance to develop the professional tools needed to communicate, present and work confidently from day one of your career.

In semester one, you will gain a solid understanding of the field, exploring areas such as corporate finance and global markets, and learning quantitative methods. Additionally, you can choose to examine ESG reporting or take a broader module on financial reporting.

You will then have the opportunity to specialise through a choice of modules including portfolio management, derivatives and risk management, international finance, and behavioural finance. You could focus on developing your corporate financial analysis skills, or prepare for ethically focused roles by taking the sustainable finance module.

During the summer semester you will participate in a live consultancy project relating to the field of finance.

During the programme you will use the LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) Workspace, a world leading provider of financial data, to complete group and individual assessments. You can also work towards the certificate of competency in LSEG Workspace, as well as other external qualifications and micro-credentials.

A key component of the MSc Finance is the opportunity to participate in a consultancy project. This allows our students to apply theoretical and research-led knowledge from their programme to real-world challenges, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Professional recognition

Our MSc Finance is part of the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute University Affiliation Program.

This status is granted to programmes that incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Level 1 Programme Candidate Body of Knowledge and that meet their quality requirements.

In addition, we are able to award a small number of scholarships for the CFA Program which are allocated on academic merit based on semester one assessments.

Compulsory modules

The aim of this module is to 

  • Develop a critical understanding of modern corporate finance theory and fixed income valuations;
  • To enable students, through the application of appropriate tools and techniques, to both evaluate and solve complex fixed income and corporate finance problems.

The aim of this module is:

  • to provide students with a solid foundation in those mathematical and statistical techniques and skills used both in their other MSc modules and in the financial industry.
  • to introduce students to widely used software; such as Python and Excel.

The module aims to provide an overview of the financial system, including: an appreciation of the economic problems that financial institutions and markets seek to overcome; an understanding of the organisation and operation of the major financial institutions and markets; an appreciation of the impact of technology and regulation on the evolution of the industry; and an awareness of how alternative structures of financial systems seek to solve common problems.

The aims of this module are:

  • to enhance students' financial literacy
  • to develop students' abilities to analyse and interpret company financial performance.

The aims of this module are:

  • to apply tools of analysis to critically evaluate portfolio management issues and performance outcome
  • to build on the skills/knowledge from semester one module Principles of Finance and selectively apply these in a portfolio context.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to derivative instruments and their use in risk management.

The aims of this module are to:

  • deepen and broaden students' understanding of conceptual and theoretical issues in accounting and financial management through real life examples;
  • develop an understanding of the analysis of firms' financial reports relevant to the investment decision and firms' valuations.
  • develop an understanding of, and apply, the tools and techniques available to value the stock of listed public companies and apply them;
  • develop and enhance transferable skills.

The aims of this module are to:

  • To provide students with an understanding of mathematical models and main concepts in Behavioural Finance;
  • To deepen and broaden students’ conceptual understanding of how financial markets ‘actually work’ and how people ‘actually make decisions’ using real-life cases and field experimental results;
  • To equip students with advanced knowledge of the latest research developments in the Behavioural Finance subject area;
  • To develop skills that will enable students to critically analyse financial decisions in greater depth.

Optional modules (choose three)

The aims of this module are to develop the skills which will allow the student to:

  • assess complex issues in international investment.
  • apply tools of analysis to critically evaluate global investment phenomenon
  • to build on the skills/knowledge from semester one and semester two modules, especially Portfolio Management (BSP425) and selectively apply these in a global context.

The aims of this module are:

  • to build on fundamental theories of corporate finance to explore more advanced corporate finance topics
  • to develop skills which will allow the student to analyse mergers and acquisitions in depth

The aims of this module are:

  • to develop an understanding of corporate governance and responsibility
  • to explore different governance mechanisms.

The aims of this module are to:

  • To provide students with an understanding of sustainable finance and its role in promoting sustainable development
  • To develop students' critical thinking skills in evaluating investment decisions through the lens of sustainability
  • To provide students with practical skills in integrating ESG factors in investment decision-making and valuation
  • To equip students with transferable skills in research, analysis, and communication of sustainability-related topics.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom

A 2:2 honours degree with a minimum of 55% or equivalent international qualification. It is helpful, but not essential, to have studied a subject with a quantitative element such as business, accounting, economics, mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry, geography, computer science or data analytics. We will consider applicants who have taken subjects that do not have a quantitative element but ask them to do some pre-course reading before the start of the programme. No prior finance study is required. Applicants with relevant professional experience or professional qualifications would be welcomed.

Irrespective of discipline, all students need to master a wide range of interpersonal, digital and analytical skills, which can be further supported with evidence gained through studying additional micro-credentials. At 91制片厂 Business School, we have designed a comprehensive suite of additional learning opportunities to ensure our graduates are ready to navigate a complex and uncertain job market.
 
These additional opportunities are constructed around three key pillars. The first is interpersonal skills; we offer guidance on personal branding, career planning and networking, as well as interview and assessment centre preparation. The second pillar addresses critical digital competencies such as data and AI skills, from non-coding essentials through to understanding data science. Finally, to bridge the gap between academic theory and the practical world, we organise a series of high quality guest speaker and masterclass sessions for students, putting the spotlight on contemporary business practices.
