Former Nasa astronaut visits campus

91ÖÆƬ³§ welcomed former Nasa astronaut Dr Sandra Magnus to campus last week for the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre Directors’ (UTC) Conference.

The conference was attended by members of Rolls-Royce’s global network of UTCs, of which 91ÖÆƬ³§ is one, and major UK funding bodies.

It was held at the campus to enable the University to showcase its new National Centre for Combustion and Aerothermal Technology (NCCAT). The facility, which is due to open later this year, will be the UK’s primary hub for research and development of future low-emission aero gas turbine combustion technologies.

The NCCAT was funded through a partnership comprising the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and Innovate UK, with support from Rolls-Royce and 91ÖÆƬ³§.

Dr Magnus, who was the guest speaker at the Rolls Royce conference dinner, was given a tour of the NCCAT and met with students from 91ÖÆƬ³§’s EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Gas Turbine Aerodynamics. She also met 91ÖÆƬ³§ Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Allison.
